Sea Limited (NYSE: SE): A Research Deep Dive
Sea Limited is a Singapore-based technology company that operates three very different businesses under one roof: a Southeast Asian e-commerce marketplace, a digital financial-services platform, and a video-game operation. That combination makes it unusual to study, because each segment earns money in a different way and carries different margins and risks.
The Story of the Business
Sea was founded in Singapore in 2009 under the name Garena, with an initial focus on online gaming. Led by founder and CEO Forrest Li, the company expanded into e-commerce with the launch of Shopee in 2015, and later into digital financial services through the platform now called Monee. Sea listed on the New York Stock Exchange in October 2017. In effect, the company used the cash and audience from its gaming business to help fund two larger opportunities in e-commerce and fintech.
Today Sea runs three interconnected businesses:
- Shopee (e-commerce) is the company’s largest segment. It connects merchants with shoppers across categories such as electronics, apparel, home goods, and beauty. Shopee earns revenue through seller fees, advertising, logistics services, and direct (first-party) merchandise sales.
- Monee (digital financial services) provides digital payments, wallets, buy-now-pay-later products, and consumer and merchant lending. It earns money from payment services and, increasingly, from credit and lending products.
- Garena (digital entertainment) develops and publishes video games, most notably Free Fire. It generates revenue primarily from in-game purchases and virtual items, and also publishes titles from external developers.
On a full-year 2025 basis, revenue broke down as follows: Shopee $16.57B (72.2% of total), Monee $3.79B (16.5%), Garena $2.41B (10.5%), and Other $0.17B (0.8%), for a total of $22.94B. A notable detail from Sea’s reporting is that although Shopee dominates total revenue, Garena and Monee contribute disproportionately to segment profitability — which helps explain why Sea’s consolidated margins are lower than those of a pure gaming or software business.
Market Share and Geographic Revenue
Regional market share. According to Momentum Works’ April 2026 report, Shopee held an estimated 53% of Southeast Asian platform e-commerce gross merchandise value (GMV) in 2025, within a regional market the firm sized at roughly $157.6 billion (up about 22.8% year over year). A DBS analysis using Momentum Works estimates placed 2025 shares at approximately 53% for Shopee, 35% for TikTok Shop (including Tokopedia), and 11% for Lazada — meaning those three platforms accounted for roughly 98.8% of regional platform GMV. At the country level, Euromonitor’s August 2026 research estimated Shopee held 46% of Indonesia’s retail e-commerce in 2025, up from 30% in 2020 (a different market definition from the regional platform-GMV figure, so the two are not directly comparable).
Revenue by geography. Sea does not publicly provide a complete country-by-country revenue breakdown; its 2025 Form 20-F reports Singapore separately and aggregates the rest into regions. For full-year 2025:
- Southeast Asia excluding Singapore: $14.38B (62.7%)
- Latin America: $5.53B (24.1%)
- Rest of Asia: $2.01B (8.7%)
- Singapore: $793M (3.5%)
- Rest of world: $228M (1.0%)
Latin America’s share rose from 16.8% in 2023 to 24.1% in 2025, with Brazil cited as the primary Latin American e-commerce market (though the regional figure should not be read as Brazil alone). Indonesia and Taiwan are described as key Southeast Asian markets, alongside Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore; individual-country revenue percentages are not separately disclosed.
Long-term vision. Sea has described a strategy of evolving from three separate digital businesses into a broader commerce-and-financial-services ecosystem: growing Shopee’s transactions, fulfillment, and advertising; expanding Monee beyond Shopee transactions into standalone financial relationships (particularly in Southeast Asia and Brazil); extending Free Fire while launching new games; and developing an enterprise AI and cloud offering called Sea Cloud. On October 20, 2026, Reuters reported that Forrest Li had outlined plans for a potential public listing of Monee and for the Sea Cloud platform, though no definitive IPO valuation, structure, or timetable had been established.
Does Sea Have a Moat?
Sea’s competitive advantages are concentrated most clearly in Shopee. The primary source is the two-sided marketplace network effect: a larger customer base attracts more merchants, more merchants widen selection and price competition, and that in turn draws more shoppers. Layered on top are logistics and scale economics (higher order volumes support delivery density and lower fulfillment costs) and a data and financial ecosystem (shopping and payment data can feed credit underwriting and ad targeting).
Recent disclosures offer evidence of improving monetization: Shopee’s advertising take rate rose by more than 90 basis points year over year, and the number of advertising-paying sellers increased approximately 45%. For Monee, management has described using AI-based risk models that draw on behavioral and transactional histories to assess credit risk — an advantage relative to lenders without comparable first-party data, though stronger data does not by itself establish a durable lending moat until it produces attractive risk-adjusted returns across a full credit cycle.
Other moat sources are weaker. Switching costs are moderate-to-low, since consumers and merchants can use multiple shopping platforms, and gaming intellectual property is only a moderate advantage because player preferences can shift quickly. The most frequently cited competitive challenge is TikTok Shop, which competes through content and discovery rather than traditional product search, and has narrowed the regional gap considerably. A central, still-open question is whether Shopee can continue growing GMV and advertising revenue while expanding operating margins, or whether that growth continues to require elevated promotional spending.
Stock Performance
Sea’s shares reached an all-time closing high of $366.99 on October 19, 2021 (with an intraday high near $372.70). As of the October 23, 2026 close of $74.63, the stock traded roughly 79.7% below that high, for a market capitalization in the ~$43–46 billion range. Historical returns through that date (excluding dividends, which Sea does not pay) were:
- Year to date: −41.5%
- One year: −52.2%
- Three years: +70.5%
- Five years: −79.0%
The company’s commentary frames three periods: a 2020–2021 surge in growth expectations; a 2022–2023 valuation reset driven by rising rates, slower gaming, operating losses, and competition; and a 2024–2026 stretch of improving profitability followed by renewed selling. Most recently, the stock fell 9.1% on October 20, 2026, following the reports about a possible Monee listing and Sea Cloud expansion. One noteworthy contrast for context: Sea’s trailing-12-month revenue grew more than 40%, while its share price fell more than 40% in 2026.
Business Performance in the Latest Quarter (Q2 2026)
Sea reported Q2 2026 results (quarter ended June 30) on August 11, 2026. Total revenue was $7.79B, up 48.1% year over year; gross profit was $3.55B (+47.3%); operating income was $650.3M (+33.3%); GAAP net income was $458.1M (+10.6%); adjusted EBITDA was $917.2M (+10.6%); and diluted EPS was $0.70 (+7.7%).
The most emphasized figure is the gap between revenue growth (48.1%) and adjusted-EBITDA growth (10.6%). Sales and marketing expenses rose 64.5% year over year, and the consolidated provision for credit losses rose 71.5% to $555.2M — both faster than revenue.
By segment:
- Shopee: revenue $5.59B (+48.2%), adjusted EBITDA $255.4M. GMV was $38.3B (+28.4%) on 4.2 billion gross orders (+27.5%). Core marketplace revenue (mainly transaction fees and advertising) rose 65.6% to $4.3B — faster than GMV. Management reaffirmed an outlook of ~25% Shopee GMV growth in 2026 and expressed confidence in exceeding $1B in full-year Shopee adjusted EBITDA.
- Monee: revenue $1.40B (+58.9%), adjusted EBITDA $288.0M. Consumer and SME loan principal outstanding was $11.1B (+62.5%), with loans more than 90 days past due stable at 1.0% of principal. Management attributed higher provisioning in part to off-Shopee lending and Brazilian exposure.
- Garena: revenue $746.6M (+33.5%), adjusted EBITDA $429.8M. Bookings were $763.5M (+15.5%); quarterly active users were 666.3M; paying users were 68.1M (+10.2%); Free Fire maintained more than 100M average daily active users. Management highlighted Palworld Online and Monster Hunter Outlanders as portfolio additions.

A few points of explanation. The trailing P/E of 28.8x is a premium to a typical slow-growing company, while the forward P/E of 17.5x is lower, reflecting expected earnings growth. The PEG ratio of 0.94x indicates the P/E is roughly in line with the growth rate embedded in the data provider’s calculation, though PEG depends heavily on estimated growth and the timeframe used. The Price/FCF of 10.9x corresponds to a trailing free cash flow yield of about 9.2%.
One important qualification applies to Sea specifically: because it operates a substantial credit business, consolidated operating cash flow can be influenced by payment-settlement balances, working-capital movements, and lending-related cash flows. As a result, traditional free cash flow may not represent the same economically distributable cash that it would for a pure software company — a reason some analysts examine Shopee’s and Garena’s cash generation separately from Monee’s lending and capital needs. Sea’s next earnings release is estimated for November 10, 2026 (worth verifying against the company’s official announcement).
